Helping Someone You Love Move After a Divorce or Separation

Moving Guides · 5 Min Read

When someone you love is going through a divorce or separation, it's hard to know what to do with your hands. You can't fix the situation, and you probably wouldn't know what to say if you could. What you can do is help with the move. It's concrete, it needs doing, and it's the kind of help people remember. This guide is for the sibling, friend, parent, or grown kid who wants to show up well.

Ask What They Need Before You Take Over

"Let me know if you need anything" is kind, but it hands the work back to the person who has the least energy for it. Offer something specific instead, like "I can take Saturday and bring a friend to pack." Then let them lead. Decisions about belongings are theirs, and some days they'll want to talk while others they'll want quiet. Following their pace is part of the help.

Take the Logistics Off Their Plate

A person in this season often can't make one more decision. You can be the one who works out how many totes they need, books the delivery, and keeps a simple list of who's coming and when. If the new place won't be ready the day they have to leave, our guide to the gap between move-out and move-in covers how to bridge it without panic.

Keep the Packing Plain and Labeled

Uniform totes make a stressful pack-up easier to manage. Label each one on the outside with the room and the owner, and add a few words about what's inside, so nobody has to open anything to figure out where it goes. Keep a numbered list alongside a few photos. We're movers, not lawyers, so we won't say what belongs to whom. If an attorney, a mediator, or a written agreement covers what leaves the house, follow that first, and leave alone anything that's in question.

Be the Calm Person in the Room

Packing in a home that's being split can be tense, especially if the other person is still around. Your job is to stay neutral. Don't comment on the other person, don't weigh in on who should get what, and don't let the day turn into a debate. If scheduling the packing for a time when the other person isn't home would make things easier, and everyone agrees to it, that can take pressure off the whole day.

If They're the One Staying

Staying is its own kind of hard. The house still carries traces of the other person, and the stuff left behind can be a daily reminder. If it's been agreed, you can help box up those belongings neatly and get them out of sight, then move a few things around so the house starts to feel like theirs again. Our pricing page lays out two-week and four-week rentals, so pick a length that leaves room to arrange a handoff without a rush.

Free delivery and pickup, with no boxes to break down and no rushed deadline while someone you love works through a big change.

Set Up the New Place First

For the person leaving, the new place is where the real adjustment starts, and it helps to make it feel livable quickly. Get the bed made, the kitchen basics out, and a few familiar things on display before anything else. If there are kids, set up their room first. Our first week in your new home guide walks through what to tackle in what order, and it works just as well when the move was not the one anyone wanted.

Plan for the Day, and for the Weeks After

On the day itself, our moving day checklist keeps the details covered so your friend or family member doesn't have to hold them. Just as important, check in afterward. The move often takes a weekend, but the adjustment takes longer, and the weeks after, once the boxes are gone and the house is quiet, are frequently the hardest. A text, a dinner, or an offer to help hang pictures does a lot.

What If They're Moving Out of Town?

Delivery and pickup stay local, but the totes can travel with them. If they're relocating to be near family or start over somewhere new, the totes can ride along and come back empty for pickup here in our service area.

Not sure how many totes to reserve? Our pricing page matches packages to home size, and sizing up is almost always the easier call. Free delivery both ways.
