Castleton vs. Fishers: Which Fits Your Move?

Moving Guides · 7 Min Read

Castleton and Fishers sit close together on the north side of the metro, and people often put them on the same short list. They are very different places, though. One is an established, commercial neighborhood in Indianapolis, and the other is one of Hamilton County's fastest-growing cities. Which one fits depends on what you want your daily life to look like, and the answer is usually clearer once you compare them side by side. Here's how they stack up, and what to think about when you plan the move itself.

Two Very Different Kinds of Places

Castleton is a neighborhood on the northeast side of Indianapolis, built up around Castleton Square, the biggest shopping mall in the state. Its identity is commercial, and that's a big part of its appeal. Fishers is a city in Hamilton County, known for newer neighborhoods, a growing downtown-style core, and a reputation as a family-friendly suburb. If you picture Castleton as a place where everything is already built and close, and Fishers as a place that is still growing and filling in, you're not far off.

Housing: Established Mix vs. Newer Neighborhoods

Castleton's housing is a real mix. You'll find ranches, split-levels, townhouses, and duplexes built mostly in the later decades of the twentieth century, alongside a large number of apartment communities. That makes it a common landing spot for renters, and it often has more rental choices than the ownership-heavy subdivisions farther out. Fishers leans toward newer single-family neighborhoods, with townhomes and apartments woven into its mixed-use areas. If you want a newer build, Fishers tends to have more of it. If you want variety, older homes, or an easier time finding a rental, Castleton usually has more to choose from. Current prices and availability change often, so look at live listings before you decide.

Everyday Convenience

This is where Castleton shines. The retail corridor around the mall has grown over decades, so groceries, restaurants, entertainment, and errands are often a few minutes away. Fishers has built a lot of convenience too, particularly around the Fishers District, a mixed-use area near the municipal center that blends residential, retail, and office space. It gives Fishers a more walkable core than it had a decade ago. Castleton wins on sheer variety of shopping, and Fishers wins on a newer, more planned feel. Neither is wrong, so it comes down to which one feels more like home to you.

Getting Around and Commuting

Castleton sits where I-69 and I-465 meet, which puts you close to two of the region's key highways. That's one reason the area developed the way it did. From there you can reach downtown in roughly half an hour, and the rest of the north side is easy to get to as well. Fishers is farther northeast and has its own road network, with growth that has kept city leaders working on traffic. Commute times depend heavily on where you work and when you drive, so do a test commute at your actual hours before you commit to either one.

Schools

The two areas are served by different districts. Castleton falls within Lawrence Township, which includes Lawrence North High School. Fishers is served by Hamilton Southeastern Schools. School boundaries are drawn by address, so check the district's own boundary tools for the specific home you're considering. If schools are a top priority, visit them, talk to local parents, and compare what matters most to your family, since a rating alone rarely tells the whole story.

Jobs and the Local Economy

Castleton has a real employment base of its own, including a corporate park in the southern part of the neighborhood and the businesses along the retail corridor. If your job is nearby, a short commute is one of the area's best selling points. Fishers has built its own reputation around technology and innovation, with Launch Fishers and the Indiana IoT Lab in the Nickel Plate District. If you work in tech or startups, or run a small business, Fishers offers a community built around that. Most people who move to either one still aren't relocating for a single employer, so think about where you'll actually spend your days.

Things to Do

Castleton may not have the museums or gallery scene of other parts of Indianapolis, but it isn't only shopping. The AMC Castleton theater hosts the Heartland Film Festival each October, which draws independent film fans from across the city. Fishers has invested in parks, trails, and its downtown-style district, and it tends to feel more oriented toward outdoor and family activities. Both are a short drive from the rest of the metro, so neither one cuts you off from the rest of the region.

Who Tends to Fit Where

Castleton tends to suit people who want convenience and variety, such as renters, people working nearby, and anyone who wants quick highway access without paying for a brand-new neighborhood. Fishers tends to suit people who want newer homes, a planned feel, and a suburban setting with a growing center, such as families who want to settle for the long term. Plenty of people don't fit neatly in either box. Spend a weekend in each, eat at a local restaurant, drive the streets at rush hour, and see which one you're relieved to come home to.

Planning the Move Itself

The move looks different depending on where you land. If you're moving into a Castleton apartment, think about elevators, parking, and the property's move-in rules, and use our guide to the gap between move-out and move-in if your dates don't line up. If you're moving into a Fishers house, expect more room and more stuff to place, so label totes by the room they're going to in the new home. Our Fishers moving guide goes deeper on the Fishers side, and if Carmel is also on your list, our guide to moving to Carmel covers that one. Our moving day checklist covers the day itself for either destination.

Check Your Address Before You Book

Delivery and pickup stay inside our service area, which is Hamilton County and north Indianapolis. Fishers is well inside it. For Castleton, confirm your specific address on the booking page, since the service area doesn't cover every part of Indianapolis. Either way, the totes can travel with you, so if you're moving from outside the area, they can ride along and come back empty for pickup.

Not sure how many totes to reserve? Our pricing page matches packages to home size, and sizing up is almost always the easier call. Free delivery both ways.
